The Maputaland Conservation Discover Tour explores the Northern KwaZulu Natal Province in South Africa, an area where WWF are and have been working for many years now. We visit Africa's Oldest Game Reserve- Hluhluwe iMfolozi, the Maputaland Coast and the Pongola Game Reserve. On tour we will join researches from a number of projects whilst enjoying the protected natural areas and a variety of exciting activities. Some of the project visits include the WWF African Wild Dog Conservation and Management Programme and the WWF/ KZN Ezemvelo Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. Along the coast, we have the opportunity to do night walks in search of Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles who venture into the dunes to lay their eggs. |

Tour Details: The are the following 2 planned departures for a maximum of 10 clients and a minimum of 4 departing and ending in Durban, South Africa. The tours will be being conducted in November 2008 and February/ March 2009. The duration of the tour is 7 days although it is recommended that you extend your stay by an extra day for transfers and connecting flights on the Monday. The WWF Maputaland Conservation Discover Tour Itinerary DAY 1: DURBAN TO HLUHLUWE-IMFOLOZI GAME RESERVE (CABIINS: LUNCH , DINNER)
Departing Durban, we head North through the lush sugar cane fields to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. We enjoy lunch and check into our accommodation. This afternoon we depart in an open vehicle for our first game drive on the reserve and search for Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo amongst many other species of wildlife.
DAY 2: HLUHLUWE-IMFOLOZI GAME RESERVE (CABINS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER)  The following morning we depart in open game viewing vehicles into iMfolozi and are joined by researchers from the WWF’s African Wild Dog Conservation and Management Programme. With the assistance of radio tracking, we search for this threatened species and hope to catch a glimpse of them in their natural environment. Over lunch, we are able to discuss the complex aspects of the project and how this project is working towards the guaranteed survival of this carnivore, we enjoy another sunset drive in the afternoon. DAY 3: MAPUTALAND COAST (LODGE: BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER)
After our last morning drive in Hluhluwe, we depart from the Game Reserve and head to the Maputaland Coast. In order to reach our isolated lodge, we are collected and transferred by 4x4 to our luxury shacks on the beach. After checking in to our accommodation, we have some time to relax and explore the beach and plan various activities for the following day. This evening we enjoy dinner and afterwards, head out on foot with our guide in search of Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles. Maputaland is well known for marine conservation especially with turtles, and these endangered species leave the ocean several times every season in order to lay their eggs in the high sand dunes, beyond the reach of the tides.  DAY 4: MAPUTALAND COAST (LODGE: BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER)
Today we have the opportunity to participate in many activities offered at our lodge. The on site diving school operates various dives throughout the day to the many reefs nearby. One can also enjoy snorkelling, village tours and sundowner trips or simply relax on the idyllic beach. After dinner we once again head out in search of the turtles nesting along the coast. DAY 5: PONGOLA GAME RESERVE (PRIVATE LODGE: BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER)
Pongola Game Reserve received 13 Black Rhino as part of a third founder population of the WWF/ KZN Ezemvelo Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. We arrive at the Reserve at about midday and have time to check into our accommodation and enjoy lunch. This afternoon we enjoy a boat cruise and sundowners on Jozini Dam after which we return to the camp for dinner.
DAY 6: PONGOLA GAME RESERVE (PRIVATE LODGE: BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER)  This morning we start early and with the assistance of the Reserve’s resident Rhino Monitor, go in search of these elusive animals in our open vehicle. We admire them and have opportunities to take photographs before returning to our camp for breakfast. We have a few hours to relax before our afternoon game drive, once again heading out in search of the Black Rhino’s and other animals.
DAY 7: PONGOLA GAME RESERVE TO DURBAN (PRIVATE LODGE: BREAKFAST) This morning we depart on another early activity of either a game drive or bush walk, returning for breakfast after which we depart for Durban and our final stop.
DAY 8: TOUR ENDS (BREAKFAST)
After breakfast we have a free day during which airport transfers will be conducted. Tour ends. TOUR PRICE: | - ZAR 21,000.00 per person sharing.
